Latino Businesses & Paypal Mafia Alignment

As a fourth generation Latino, I have often felt like an outsider and have sought better ways to associate my identity with my heritage. When I am surrounded by white people, I feel more like a Latino, but when I am surrounded by Latinos, I sometimes feel like a gringo. I have traveled the distance from Spanish Harlem to dot com millionaire. Since a spinal cord injury in 2018, I have been partially paralyzed and regularly consult with my cognitive behavioral therapist, with whom I often discuss the issues of practicing proper value alignment to guide your actions. Now that I am in the San Francisco Bay area surrounded by venture capitalists, I am often asked about my goals for making money. They will ask: “What is your moat?” We build Bridges Not Moats. Actually, I have enough money already, and my offspring do not need me to leave them money after I am gone. However, they will need a planet, where they can breathe the air and drink the water! Thus, I would like to help others to make values valuable again by building profitable businesses that promote community owned infrastructure networks.

First, consider your value alignment with the Earth

Here are some quotes that express a deep sense of alignment with the Earth and the natural world:

Indigenous & Traditional Wisdom

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (often attributed to Native American tradition)

“The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth.” — Chief Seattle

“Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children.” — Kenyan proverb

Ecological Thinkers

“The land is one great poem.” — John Muir

“We are the most dangerous species of life on the planet, and every other species, even the earth itself, has cause to fear our power to exterminate. But we are also the only species which, when it chooses to do so, will go to great effort to save what it might destroy.” — Wallace Stegner

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” — John Muir

“The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.” — Joseph Campbell

Philosophy & Spirituality

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” — Albert Einstein

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” — Gary Snyder

“The poetry of the earth is never dead.” — John Keats

“To forget how to dig the earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Modern Environmentalism

“We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do.” — Barbara Ward

“The Earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.” — Pope John Paul II

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” — Mahatma Gandhi

American Latino Business Associations and PayPal Mafia Alignment

The “PayPal Mafia” refers to a group of former PayPal founders and early employees—most notably Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and David Sacks—who have become highly influential figures in Silicon Valley and U.S. politics [1]. Their collective ideology is generally characterized by techno-libertarianism, a strong preference for free-market capitalism, deregulation, meritocracy, and a skepticism toward government intervention and traditional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives [2] [3]. They also tend to favor high-skilled immigration (such as H-1B visas for tech talent) while opposing broader social safety nets or identity-based corporate policies [4].

The table below analyzes several major American Latino business associations, detailing their missions and evaluating their alignment with the core tenets of the PayPal Mafia’s ideology.

Association NameMissionAlignment IndicatorAlignment Explanation
United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC)To build an ecosystem to accelerate Hispanic business growth and prosperity, championing the growth and success of America’s small businesses.Neutral to ProThe USHCC’s focus on free enterprise, small business growth, and economic prosperity aligns well with the PayPal Mafia’s pro-business, capitalist ethos. However, the USHCC’s reliance on government procurement programs and supplier diversity initiatives may conflict with the Mafia’s strict libertarian stance against government intervention.
Latino Business Action Network (LBAN)To strengthen the U.S. economy by empowering Latino entrepreneurship across the country through research, education, and network building.ProLBAN’s emphasis on entrepreneurship, scaling businesses, and building a Silicon Valley-based ecosystem closely mirrors the PayPal Mafia’s belief in innovation, networking, and merit-based business success. Their partnership with Stanford University also reflects the Mafia’s academic roots.
Latino Startup Alliance (LSA)To encourage the inspiration and cultivation of U.S. Latino-led technology startup ventures by providing a strong support network of fellow entrepreneurs, investors, innovators, and mentors.ProLSA’s direct focus on technology startups, venture capital, and innovation in Silicon Valley is highly aligned with the PayPal Mafia’s core interests. Both groups prioritize technological advancement and building strong founder networks to disrupt industries.
Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR)To advance the inclusion of Hispanics in Corporate America at a level commensurate with their economic contributions, focusing on employment, procurement, philanthropy, and governance.AntiHACR’s mission is deeply rooted in promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within corporate boards and executive leadership. This directly conflicts with the PayPal Mafia’s vocal opposition to DEI programs, which figures like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk often criticize as anti-meritocratic or discriminatory [3].
National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP)To advance sustainable Hispanic homeownership by educating and empowering real estate professionals and advocating for supportive public policy.NeutralNAHREP operates within the free market of real estate, which aligns with capitalist principles. However, they actively advocate for DEI as a critical business strategy and support government policies to close the housing wealth gap, which diverges from the PayPal Mafia’s deregulatory and anti-DEI stances.
National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB)To build transformational wealth in Latino communities and advance economic mobility for low- and moderate-income people by deploying capital and influencing policy.AntiNALCAB focuses on economic equity, community development, and supporting historically marginalized groups through nonprofit work and government policy influence. This collective, equity-driven approach contrasts sharply with the PayPal Mafia’s hyper-individualistic, libertarian, and free-market ideology.
UnidosUSTo build a stronger America by creating opportunities for Latinos, serving as the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization.AntiAs a civil rights organization focused on racial equity, social justice, and comprehensive immigration reform, UnidosUS’s mission is fundamentally at odds with the PayPal Mafia’s techno-libertarianism, skepticism of social safety nets, and opposition to identity-based equity initiatives.
